So, just like every year, I helped our brood made their time capsules as a way to keep up with them as they grow like weeds.
This year, I started with 3 glass cyliners that I bought from Hobby Lobby for only 5.95 a piece. Then, like the total cheapskate I am, I whipped out my 40% off coupon. Bam! Less than 10 buckaroos for all three.
Am I the only one that sees the cingular bars? It’s just the angle, their actually all the same size if you take a step back.
I used some adhesive letters that I had left over from another project to label each capsule with their name. I had run out of certain letters, like an ‘E’ for instance. But I just improvised by cutting the humps off of a ‘B.’ Can you tell?
Then we got to work on the contents.
It’s fun to look back each year and see the kids’ likes and dislikes, the changes in their handwriting, etc. Like this year, Owen has become frustrated with his handwriting. He calls it ‘big’ because he writes too large for the line. He got so aggrivated that he asked me to write his answers for him. So, being the good scribe that I am, I jotted down his answers verbatim.
This year he’s on a cool whip kick. Every day, for his snack, the kid wants cool whip. Whether it’s alone or on fruit. Hell, he even put it on a piece of turkey and didn’t even wince when he ate it. That’s my boy! Therefore, many of his answers related to cool whip. He even gave me cool whip answers while eating cool whip. True story.
Then we did the imfamous lets-see-how-tall-you-are measurement using ribbon. I assumed I had enough orange ribbon for everyone so I measured the little ones first….and ran out of ribbon. I dug and dug and all I had were girly colors so my big, strong, almost 12 year old boy got stuck with….PINK. Me being me said, "E, we can run to the store really quick (it’s less than a mile away) and get some more ribbon.” And Ethan being my sweet little Ethan said, “Mom, you do a lot. You don’t have to go to the store just for ribbon, we can use the pink.” Sweetest.Kid.Ever. Seriously, he is the sweetest, most genuine, thoughtful, selfless child that I have ever come into contact with. And I don’t just say that because he’s mine.
Next they draw or write or make something to put in the time capsule. As a mom with a degree in Psychology I love scoping out what they choose to draw and make for this project. As well as how it relates to what they chose to make the prior year.
The boys made things out of legos and drew a picture. Ari drew a picture and tossed in a handful of bling.
Then, we typically take a picture. But when I pulled out my little polaroid camera I realized I was fresh outta film. Grrr. So I just printed out some pics that I had taken of each of them within the past few days.

Then, they placed everything in their jars and viola!
Our December 2011 time capsules. Not to be opened until December 2012.

Lorri
