"No more tryin' to make it work..." with this ugly curio cabinet, that is. It makes "me wanna say 'BYE, BYE'..." Okay, I'll stop singing (and dancing) now.
So we have this curio cabinet.
And it origianlly went in our old dining room, keyword being ‘old.’ But it was no longer welcome in our new dining room because we no longer have the traditional, uptight look going on in there, instead we’re a bit more funky/modern/vintage/eclectic with our décor these days. And I considered donating the curio and painting the curio and craigslisting the curio and running the curio over with a semi, okay, the semi part was a bit extreme, but you get the point.
Instead, I decided to keep the curio and use it in our master bedroom. And since I’m going for the whole mixed-wood-finishes in our master bedroom, I decided to keep the curio in it’s original dark color. But I wasn’t diggin’ the 1990’s mirror backing because, well, it was very 1990’s in my opinion. But perhaps more importantly the accessories we were putting in the curio were getting lost in in all the glass and mirror-ness. Yep, that’s a word. So while I wanted to leave the dark wood finish I wanted to change the back of the curio. That’s where contact paper came into play. I simply measured and cut out contact paper and adhered it to the back of the curio. Then I painted it. Say wuuuuut?!
Yeah, ya'll. I painted it. because the contact paper had bubbles in it and it turned into a big, hot mess so I scrapped that idea and simply painted it with some leftover blue paint that I had sitting around. And ya know, I'm glad that I ended up going with blue because a lot of our accessories are white and I wanted the accessories to pop against the backing rather than get washed away in it like they would if the backing were simply white contact paper.

I also relocated the curio to the other side of the room. When it used to live next to our dark dresser and the two dark tones side-by-side in our small space made it look bleh.
So now that it lives on the same wall as our purdy white nightstands the dark finish of the curio isn’t as heavy looking as it was in it’s old corner.
And you may also notice that in this photo above the bottom right corner of the cabinet is the same color as the rest of the curio, where as in this photo below...
See the three pieces of furniture all matchy-matchy in the same wood tone? No bueno. |

...there was a slight defect in the wood. And by defect I mean a corner that Bear gnawed at as a puppy. Well, we don't gnaw anymore. And we also own sandpaper and stain now so we fixed that!
Ah, small changes keep making such a great difference in here. And in case you didn't get my song reference, I'm chuckin' up the deuces (in the first photo) to the old look of our curio - as Chris Brown would say, "I'm on some new sh*t, I'm chuckin' my dueces uuuuuup..."
Sorry curio,
Lor
