Chalk-O-Rama

I've been on a chalkboard kick lately. I saw a photo of an entire kitchen wall painted with chalkboard paint and I was instantly in love. Yep, I fall in love with chalkboard walls. Since we live in a rental I wasn't about to paint a wall just to have to repaint it when we moved out, so I decided to make a big ol' chalkboard that we can take along with us every time we move.

During one of my trips to Goodwill I spotted this big mirror, it's one of those mirrors that's supposed to go over a dresser.

I knew I could use it as my chalkboard and at $19.99 I bought it.

It was a slight off white (which is tough to see in the photo) so I went over it with a couple of coats of white spray paint.

Then I hit up Lowe's and got a sheet of galvanized steel (so that my chalkboard would be magnetic). I had to cut it a bit to fit the mirror but it was surprisingly easy to cut with a pair of tin snips. Then I sprayed it with chalkboard paint. Once dry, I simply adhered the sheet of galvanized steel to the mirror with liquid nails.

See that little spot at the top of the mirror? I decided to personalize it. I had some scraps of compressed wood laying around and adhered them with E-6000.

Then I sketched my vision directly onto the wood to see if I liked it. I did.

So I then covered it with scrapbook paper that I dug out of my messy scrapbook paper bin, sprayed painted wood letters that I bought at Michael's, and used stickers I had on hand to complete the look.

It definitely gets plenty of use. It's in the hallway where the kids bedrooms are so they often write messages on it. Ariana wrote the above message. It originally said we were going to the beach and she wrote what everyone should do when we get there. Beside Owen's name she wrote: "hang on shore" ...I die.

Oh, I also bought a magnetic thing-a-ma-jig at Target to hold our chalk and eraser.

And Ari and I made magnets out of little gems and glitter that we had on hand.

Ta-da! So there you have it, our little big chalkboard.

Are ya'll on the chalkboard bandwagon? Or any other trend that you can't help but see everywhere?
